Mike

A legal AI workspace for criminal defense firms

Criminal defense firms use Mike to read discovery, police reports and transcripts, compare witness accounts, track what has and has not been produced, and draft motions and cross examination outlines. Every statement cites the page it came from, so an attorney can check it against the file.

Attorney: Compare the arresting officer's report with the second officer's report and the complainant's recorded statement on how the stop began. Draft the facts section of a motion to suppress.

Mike: The arresting officer writes that he stopped the car for an unsignaled lane change [1]. The second officer's report says the stop began after a dispatch call about the vehicle [2], and the dispatch log shows that call came in four minutes after the stop [3]. I drafted the facts section of the motion to suppress with those three points.

  2. [2] Second officer report, p. 1
  3. [3] Dispatch log, entry 7

Example matter. Names and documents are fictional.

A criminal case arrives as a stack of discovery that grows through the life of the matter: reports, body camera logs, lab results, recorded statements, prior records. Mike reads each new batch as it comes in, ties it to the case, and keeps an index of what the state has produced and what the attorney has asked for but not received.

Cuanto Labs installs Mike for your firm, connects it to the folders where case files live, and loads your motion templates and intake forms. Sealed juvenile and cooperating witness material stays inside your firm's own installation.

What Mike does for your practice

Discovery indexing
Mike reads each discovery production and builds an index with document type, date, author and a short description, so the attorney knows what is in the file, what is new, and what is missing from the state's own list.
Comparing witness accounts
Mike lines up the complainant's, officers' and witnesses' statements about the same events and lists where they agree, differ or add detail, with the page and line for each, to prepare cross examination outlines.
Police report and warrant review
Mike reads reports, warrant applications and returns and lists the facts relied on, the sources given for them, and the places where the documents do not match each other, for the attorney to evaluate for a motion.
Motion drafts
Mike drafts motions to suppress, to compel and in limine from your templates and the record, with a record cite after each fact. Case law is searched in published opinions, and the attorney decides which authorities and arguments to use.
Sentencing materials
From records, evaluations and letters in the file, Mike drafts a sentencing memorandum background section and organizes mitigation documents, which the attorney edits and completes.
Plea and offer comparison
Mike reads offers and charging documents and lays the terms side by side in a table, so the client conversation starts from a clear comparison.

How we set it up for your firm

Case files, connected
We connect Mike to the drive or document system where your case files and discovery live, so attorneys ask about a matter without uploading each production again.
Your motion bank
We load the motions, discovery demands and sentencing memoranda your firm has written, so drafts start from your own work product and your court's local style.
Discovery review templates
We build tabular review templates for the fields you track, such as document type, source, date and witness, so each production is read the same way.
Witness statement matrix
We build a template that places each witness's account of the event side by side by topic, with the page of each statement, so inconsistencies are visible before cross examination.
Discovery demand log
We set up the log your office uses for requests to the state, so Mike can compare what was demanded, what arrived and what the court ordered.

Questions attorneys ask

Can Mike review recordings and body camera footage?

Mike reads documents, including transcripts, logs and summaries of recordings. It does not watch video or listen to audio. If your team or a vendor produces a transcript or log, Mike can read that and compare it with the reports. Any claim about what a recording shows should be checked against the recording.

Does Mike know the criminal procedure rules in my jurisdiction?

Mike searches published case law and reads the opinions it cites, and we can connect the statutes and research sources your firm uses. It does not replace the attorney's knowledge of local practice. Every authority links to its source, and the attorney decides what is correct and what to file.

Can it help keep track of missing discovery?

Yes. Mike indexes what has been produced and can compare the index with the state's own discovery list, a request letter or a court order, then draft a demand listing the items that appear to be missing. The attorney confirms the list before it is sent. Ask for the list again after each new production, and Mike updates it against the documents received so far.

Can Mike draft a cross examination outline from the discovery?

Yes. Mike can build an outline for a witness from reports, statements and prior testimony, grouping questions by topic with the page behind each point and noting where the witness said something different elsewhere. The attorney chooses the order and which points to leave alone. The outline arrives as a Word document that is edited like any draft.

Can Mike help prepare a sentencing memorandum?

Mike can pull the facts that bear on sentencing from the file, such as the client's record, letters of support and treatment records, into a table with page references, and draft sections of the memorandum from your prior examples. Strategy, mitigation themes and what to disclose to the court remain with the attorney.
