Open-source legal AI your firm can inspect and host
Mike is open-source software under the AGPL-3.0 license, developed in public at github.com/open-legal-products/mike. Any firm can read the code and run it on its own servers. Cuanto Labs is an independent company that installs, configures and runs Mike for law firms that want it set up for their practice without building it themselves.

What Mike is
Mike is a legal AI platform for document review, drafting and legal research. It chats with your documents and matters, suggests edits to Word documents as tracked changes, runs reusable workflows and tabular reviews across many documents at once, and searches and verifies US case law through CourtListener. A Microsoft Word add-in is in beta.
It is built from a Next.js web app, an Express backend, a Postgres database and S3-compatible file storage, which is why it can run in your firm's own environment rather than in a shared service.
What the AGPL-3.0 license means for a firm
The license lets anyone use, study, change and run the software. If someone changes it and offers it to users over a network, they must make the source of their changed version available to those users. For a law firm using Mike internally, the practical effect is simple: you can read every line your installation runs, and no one can take that right away.
- Inspectable
- Your IT team or an outside reviewer can audit how documents, prompts and credentials are handled, instead of relying on a vendor's summary.
- Portable
- Your data sits in standard Postgres and S3-compatible storage. If you change providers, the installation and its data move with you.
- Not locked to one model
- Mike works with Anthropic, Google Gemini and OpenAI models, or with models run locally through Ollama.
Self-hosting it yourself or a managed setup
A firm with its own engineers can deploy Mike from the public repository and maintain it. The project's documentation covers the database, storage, sign-in and model configuration.
Most firms would rather spend attorney time on matters than on servers. A managed setup from Cuanto Labs covers the parts that take the most work: connecting the systems where your documents already live, loading your templates and workflows, configuring sign-in and access for your team, training attorneys on real matters, and applying updates afterwards.
| Self-hosted by your firm | Managed setup by Cuanto Labs | |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Mike, open source | Mike, open source |
| Where it runs | Your servers or cloud account | Your servers or a private cloud account you choose |
| Connectors and templates | Your team configures them | We connect your systems and load your templates |
| Training | Your team | A working session on your own matters |
| Updates and monitoring | Your team | We apply updates and monitor the installation |
Common questions
Is Mike free?
The software is free to use under the AGPL-3.0 license. Running it has costs: a server or cloud account, file storage, and the AI provider your firm uses. A managed setup from Cuanto Labs is quoted per firm after a call, based on the systems to connect and the practices to configure.
Who maintains Mike?
Mike is developed in public in the open-legal-products/mike repository on GitHub, which also lists how to report security issues privately. Cuanto Labs builds firm setups on the public releases and keeps each installation updated.
Can we switch away from Cuanto Labs later?
Yes. The software is open source and your data is in standard Postgres and S3-compatible storage in a location your firm controls. Another provider, or your own IT team, can take over the same installation.
Does open source mean our documents are public?
No. The code is public; your installation and everything in it are private. Open source means anyone can read how the software works, not what your firm stored in it.
